The former president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested on Tuesday at the Manila International Airport by order of the International Criminal Court (TPI), which accuses him of crimes against humanity for the bloody war against drugs during his term (2016-2022). Human Rights Defensor Groups ensure that, during this campaign, tens of thousands of people were executed extrajudicially.
The 79 -year -old Filipino leader has been arrested by the police upon his return from Hong Kong, where he was traveling, and has remained a few hours in custody at the Villamor Air Base, according to the Filipino government, until the take -off of a flight to the Hague, where the court claims. Around midnight (seven hours less in peninsular Spain), the president of the country, Ferdinand Marcos Júnior, has confirmed that the aircraft with Duterte on board has abandoned the airspace of the Philippines. “The plane is on the route to The Hague, which will allow the former president to face charges for crimes against humanity in relation to his bloody war against drugs,” Marcos announced, while stressing that the government has done its “work” in compliance with an Interpol request. “I am sure that the arrest is correct and has followed all the necessary legal procedures,” added Marcos. One of the legal advisors of the detainee, Salvador Panelo, has described the arrest of “illegal”, claiming, among other reasons, that the Philippines retired in 2019 from the court. In fact, the country had refused until last year to cooperate with the investigation of the TPI, arguing that it had no jurisdiction on the case. “In Tuesday, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) of Manila received the official copy of the arrest warrant,” said the Filipino Executive. “The former president and his team enjoy good health and a government doctor is examining them,” according to the statement on the arrest, collected by the PNA news agency. The authorities ensure that the police officers who executed the arrest warrant were equipped with body cameras to guarantee the transparency of the operation. The order issued by the TPI against Duterte accuses him of crime against humanity for the murders of the drug campaign. According to the 15 -page document, the former president directed the so -called Davao death squad before assuming the country’s leadership and then supervised the anti -drug offensive from the presidency. The TPI argues that these operations constituted a systematic attack against the civilian population, with thousands of victims. In addition, he points out that Duterte not only allowed executions, but also supplied weapons, offered financial incentives and guaranteed impunity to those responsible. “They will have to kill me first” Duterte and their companions landed on Tuesday at the Ninoy Aquino Aquino International Aquino Aquino Aquino Aquino Aquino de Manila shortly after nine o’clock local time (shortly after one o’clock in the Peninsular Spain). At that time, the attorney general of the country presented the notification of the Court, and the National Security Forces escorted the former president outside the airport. Minutes before his arrest, when he got out of the plane, the politician was challenging: “They will have to kill me first,” he said, faithful to his style, according to local media. “Move me now the legal basis that I find here,” he heard Duterte say in a video published by Rappler, in which he is sitting in a chair and with serious countenance. The atmosphere seems relaxed. “They must respond for this deprivation of my freedom,” he continues. A figure still influences a Duterte abandoned politics in 2022, he continues to be one of the most influential figures in the Philippines. In fact, his daughter Sara is the vice president of the Republic. The ex -president has also enjoyed relative immunity despite the multiple accusations that weigh against him. In Hong Kong, a city that hosts a large Philippine community (it is the most numerous ethnic minor Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, whose Cleptocratic and despot Ties broke quickly due to the growing tensions within the coalition and the political ambitions of both sides. Bongbong began to distance himself from the Duterte, mainly on issues such as cooperation with TPI and control over security forces, which culminated in public clashes and the weakening of the support of the vice president within the Executive. At the end of 2023, Marcos Júnior’s government allowed discreetly the entry of TPI researchers in the Philippines. And last year, the House of Representatives began its own investigations on the war on drugs. Rodrigo Duterte refused to testify, but in October he appeared at an audience in the Senate, where he still has an important support. “Today, our own government has given a Filipino citizen – and neither more nor less than an former president – foreign powers. This is a flagrant affront to our sovereignty and an insult for each Philippine that believes in the independence of our nation, ”said Sara Duterte on Tuesday. For his part, the minor daughter of the ex -president, Verónica, has written on her Instagram account: “They have removed my dad, they have put it in an plane and have not told us where they take it. People, wake up. ” In a video posted on that social network, a policeman explains after the arrest to the family that there is “a prepared charter”; “They are our obligations. We can do it for bad or good. They must choose three people who will accompany (a Duterte) to the plane. ”War against the drug trafficker war against Duterte drug trafficking became the cornerstone of his mandate. His populist message and the promise of exercising hard hand to clean the streets of traffickers and drug addiction led him to the presidency, although many experts claimed that the country did not face a disproportionate problem of drug use. In his campaign closing rally, he urged his electorate to “forget human rights laws.” “Traffickers, thieves and lazy, you better leave you, because I will kill you,” he warned then. According to official police data, about 6,200 suspects died in the operations, but local and international NGOs raise the figure to more than 30,000. In 2021, the TPI initiated an investigation against him for the extrajudicial executions that occurred between 2011 and 2019, all of them under his mandate: first (between 2009 and 2015) as Governor of Davao, the second largest city in the country; and then at the national scale. DUTERTE retired Philippines from TPI unilaterally in 2019, a movement that activists criticized for considering an attempt to avoid accountability. Despite this organism, the Philippines continues to be a member of the Interpol, which has the power to request the arrest of Duterte in the name of the Court.
