Household, meal preparation, homework help, emotional support: these gestures mainly carried out by women represent a very monopolizing work, but they remain absent from official economic statistics. According to INSEE, the 60 billion hours of invisible work in France would represent up to a third of the national GDP if they were paid as household hours. In other words, this “hidden time” sometimes doubles the volume of paid work in homes. But its impact goes beyond the simple domestic plan. According to INSEE data relayed by 20 minutes, in France, more than one in two of children under 8 years old stopped working after the birth of her children or temporarily reduced her working time.
