DHL opens modern logistics center despite tariffs

It is quiet shortly after the start: not a package that whip along the red conveyor belts, no parcel that falls down one of the yellow 31 slides to be loaded into an aircraft container. The new logistics center of DHL Express in Mexican Querétaro was officially put into operation only a few minutes ago. And employees can also hardly be seen. “It only gets loud at night,” says one of the few employees when he crosses the hall. The first trucks will roll up late at night, dozens of employees will then unload thousands of document envelopes or packages of up to 80 kilograms of weight and place them on the roller bands. In the early morning, each handling and cardboard will have completed more than four kilometers on the conveyor belts in order to finally be loaded in a container for the destination. The system can sort up to 41,000 packages an hour, as much as the largest German logistics centers in Aschheim near Munich or Obertshausen near Frankfurt. Construction with more than 30,000 square meters is the largest investment by the German logistics group in Latin America. The facility, which the company describes as the most modern in the entire region, has cost $ 120 million. According to its own statements, the group has so far invested around $ 600 million in Mexico. However, the time of the opening of the opening is unusual: only recently has the Group’s Sister Deutsche Post announced the reduction of 8,000 positions in Germany. And US President Donald Trump threatens Mexico and other business partners every few days with customs increases that could significantly more expensive and slow down the trade. The day of the opening is “one of the happiest in my professional life,” says DHL Express boss John Pearson at the opening in Querétaro. The investment shows that the express business is growing vigorously. In the fourth quarter of 2024 alone, sales of the division grown to 6.7 billion euros, more than half of the group profit of 1.8 billion euros came from the business with international speed. And if it goes to Pearson, the business will continue to grow strongly in times of customs conflicts. Mexico plays a central role in the growth strategy, as Antonio Arranz explains, the head of state of DHL Express. “We Mexicans love to act.” Of course, this is close to the USA. About 80 percent of the Mexican export goes to the northern neighbors. The hub in Querétaro on the edge of the regional airport completely focuses on the near -nearhoring, the relocation of industrial production from the USA into a significantly cheaper Mexico – which Trump wants to make Trump unattractive through higher tariffs to bring production back to the United States. Potosi positioned, an industrial city in which BMW, Continental, Daimler and Thyssenkrupp have settled. In Querétaro itself, Siemens and Bombardier have works. From then on, she and other companies should go to DHL to send their express deliveries to works in the USA or to suppliers in Mexico via the new hub. Within the country, the logistician promises delivery within 24 hours. Twelve freight flights every day should distribute the goods to their destinations in Mexico or deliver from there, connect two more flights to Querétaro to the large DHL turn in the American Cincinnati.Damit The envelope is largely automated as possible, the new stroke is largely automated. Apart from unloading the trucks and loading of the flight container, no human handle is required, says the local boss Arranz. “This reduces the risk of failure from five to 0.2 percent.” 178 employees will be employed in the hub, these are almost as many as the first sorting center next door, which has less than half of the capacity. “The global trade is too big to fail” The DHL Express managers do not believe that an escalating customs conflict could stop. “Global trade is too big to fail,” says express boss Pearson in Mexico several times. “And where there is a headwind, there is also a tailwind.” Arranz says that the uncertainty even offers the logistics service provider additional opportunities. If customers quickly wanted to increase their camps because of the statements from Washington, it was an additional business. The same applies if customs rules are increasingly complicated, then customers need additional help and advice. However, the optimism of the bosses does not share all employees in Querétaro. One of them tells that customs clearance to the United States has been taking around twice as long as before for a few weeks. The speed advantage that the new automated hub would bring to the customer would have taken on the border. This paid off in 2010 when the company built the first hub in Querétaro in the middle of an economic crisis – and soon reached its limits. The new hub will also be busy soon, Arranz believes. “As soon as we opened it, let’s think of expansion.”
