Ethiopia: Due to money cuts, compulsion to stop food aid

UN agency’s national director Zlaton Milisich has warned that 36 million people are facing the risk of not getting food and nutrition assistance in Ethiopia, while they are already facing extremely sensitive circumstances. Malnutrition rates are at a high level of worrying. More than 40 million pregnant, breastfeeding women and young children need to treat malnutrition in Ethiopia. In Somali, Oromia, Afar and Tigre areas, the problem of nattapan in children has crossed the limit of 15 percent, which was fixed for emergency. WFP plans to provide life -saving nutrition to 20 lakh women and children during the year 2025, but due to only 50 percent of the previous year’s amount, it has been decided to get the leaflets. Said that the supply of nutritious diet is getting over and due to this we are stopping these programs. We expect something to happen soon, but no assistance has been received at present. During the first three months of this year, the UN agency had ensured food and nutrition support for more than 3 million people. Among them are seven and a half million children and pregnant and breastfeeding women. Due to the financial support cuts, the UN agency has cut food logistics for weak communities. It is very challenging for humanitarian aids due to the fight in Amhara area of Ethiopia, which has caused any interruption in the relief campaign and has lost on support for five lakh people. It has been reported that there is a risk on the safety of relief workers and this has affected the help efforts. According to the concerted environment medium, the fight in the Oromia region of the country is going on and there is also increasing tension in the tigre, where about five lakh people were killed in the civil war between rebellious groups and government security forces from 2020 to 2022. 4.70 lakh people are being provided daily school diet. Along with the possibility of drought in Oromia, Somali and southern regions, efforts have been made to provide a premature warning and cash assistance to two lakh people to protect the livelihood of the local population.
