The “monkey” of Percins was released in the rental: the director of the “Soul collector” was filmed by one of the most famous stories by Stephen King-about a groovy killer monkey. The film critic Anton Dolin tells why Perkins hardly become the new Classic of the horror – although the director clearly wants to do this. How quickly time is rushing. And the year did not have passed, as everyone admired the “shower collector”, a pretentious thriller, where an occultist-satanist played spectacularly impressive Nicholas Cage. Director of the OZA perkins was called the new superstar of the “sublime horror”, meaningfully mentioning in every article that his father Anthony Perkins played a major role in the Hichkokovsky “Psychosis”. But then the next picture of Perkins “Monkey” came out – and recent fans are hardly hiding confusion. The film will clearly not become either a steal of rolling, nor the favorite of critics, although he can form a certain cult status over the years. The art of the picture is impressive. She was staged according to Steven King’s hit, written in the best creative period of the “king of horrors” and once already filmed (“Devil’s gift”, 1984), in the producers – the genre of the genre James Van (“saw”, “Astral”, “Spell”). But the impression of the first scene, and from all the pretty obsolete and anecdotal situation with a children’s toy, damned by the forces of darkness, can hardly be considered frightening. There is plenty of blood and naturalism in the “monkey”, but this meat grinder looks more like a grotesque comedy, sometimes reaching the heights of “Monti Pyton and the Holy Grail” – remember the rabbit who gnawed his throat to the knights? Before the final, you continue to perplexed whether the author’s plan is such – or the ratio of elements is designed with a mistake, and the terrible involuntarily became ridiculous. When in the finale on the screen he waddles (sorry, spoiler!) The apocalyptic “pale horse” with an appropriate rider, the unequivocal feeling of WTF reaches the climax. Recall the plot of those who did not read King and did not look at the old adaptation. Two twin brothers, Hal and Bill (both were played by the Briton, Theo James, known for the divergent franchise and the second season of the White Lotus) grew without a father. Once in his things, they discover brought from distant wanderings – dad was a pilot – a clockwork monkey with a drum. Experisively, boys find out that the toy is cursed: every time you turn the key, the monkey begins to play its infernal march and someone dies nearby, as if from an accident. Of course, injured brothers, one of whom constantly humiliates the other, immediately decide to use the artifact to information personal accounts. They still do not know that the toy is arbitrarily chooses the victims … “Death is inevitable,” the smart mother explains frightened children. – There are no “if” or “how”, only “when”. The answer of the film is simple: every five minutes, at least. “Death will probably happen to everyone, but we do not cease to be surprised,” another character sadly states. Well, Perkins definitely wants to impress the audience with bloody scenes. Perhaps we should not talk about the details of deaths so as not to get carried away – and not to spoil the viewer the only pleasure that he will definitely receive from the ingenuity of authors and artists in visual effects. A couple of times they managed to overcome even the “destination.” But this leads to a paradoxical result: the concentration of the corpses is so great that you can no longer tremble on the fifth or sixth, and the laughter ceases to be nervous. The intrigue, meanwhile, is stereotyped to a parody degree. To worry about Luser Hal, and even more so for his brother Bill, more prone to sadism, is impossible. Not to mention the fact that they – albeit unknowing – this porridge and brewed. The only sane person on the screen is a minor son Hal-a smart teenager Pete, and even that is about to adopt and finally leaves the Enterprise Father’s Ted (excellent episode of Elijah Wood). In the meantime, Pete, along with his father and uncle, without great success, trying to defeat the clockwork devil, squinting the innocent to the right and left. And the whole world, presented on the screen, turns into the same amusement park “The Kingdom of Horror”, where Hal dreamed of taking a teenager to finally win his love (there was no need to talk about respect, this train has long left). It is like a perkins is an educated and well -examined, almost too much. The “monkey” cannot cause a strong emotional reaction – neither laughter nor fear – because it is woven from references to the same garbage adaptations of King, which filled the eighties and nineties. Then, along with universally recognized masterpieces like “Carrie”, “Renia” or “The Dead Zone”, countless “children of corn”, “cat eye”, “silver bullet”, “night shift”, sorry, “Davilka”, “Davilka”! According to one of the scenes, it seems that the direct model for imitation in the “Monkey” is the funny Almanac Romero “Kaleidoscope of Horrors” (1982), funny to this day, in which King debuted as a screenwriter. Techniques and intonation are copied by Perkins respectfully and accurately. The only question is why? The most convincing version will tell a film, the heroes of which suffer from incurable infantilism and an obvious lack of fatherly authority. The director finds out relations with the generation of parents – from his great father to the same King, obviously a paternal figure, and at the same time outstanding authors of the canonical films of horrors, which Perkins is so trying to imitate. King’s geniality was always that his most trifling texts penetrated deeply into human psychology (both characters and readers), often offering complex and extraordinary extra Metaphors and ideas. There are only two thoughts in the “monkey”. One sounds from the screen: “Everyone is dying, such is life.” It is difficult to disagree, but why break the chairs?
