Tel Aviv: As soon as the government of Bashar al-Assad fell in Syria and the rebel group HTS took control of Damascus, the Israeli Army has captured the Syrian Golan Heights buffer zone. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after the occupation that the Golan Heights have been a part of his country for 60 years. His statement comes when Israel’s occupation of a passive buffer zone in Syrian territory is being criticized. The victory of Islamic rebels in Syria has dealt a blow to the influence of Russia and Iran, while Israel seems encouraged by it. Israeli troops have reached Syria after almost 50 decades. According to the report of News 18, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has said that after the fall of the Assad regime, the 50-year-old ceasefire agreement of 1974 has ended. Israel said it had decided to capture the area after Syrian troops left their positions. Israel has captured this area in the UN-monitored buffer zone by carrying out ground and air strikes this week. The United Nations has called this action a violation of the 1974 Displacement Agreement. Israel captured the Golan Heights in southwestern Syria in 1967. Except America, the rest of the world considers it the occupied territory of Syria. After the agreement in 1974, a buffer zone was created here but now Israel has broken it. Netanyahu’s decision is being seen as a way to strengthen border security. India’s statement in favor of Syria! India has clarified its stand on this development and confirmed its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria. India also advocated a political process in Syria that includes all sections of Syrian society. Minorities, Shias, Kurds, Alawites and other groups should also be included in this. India had voted in favor of the resolution in the United Nations General Assembly last year, in which it expressed deep concern over Israel not withdrawing from the Syrian Golan region. The 193-member General Assembly voted on the draft resolution on ‘Syrian Golan’ on November 28, 2023. Syria has received consistent support from India. India and Syria have long had friendly relations. Both countries have maintained diplomatic relations even during difficult times. India has supported Syria on various international issues, including Syria’s claims on Palestine and the Golan Heights. However, there is a possibility of change in India-Syria relations after the fall of Assad.
