South Korean President Yun Suk Yeol has been banned from leaving the country. According to the country’s Justice Ministry, President Yoon will not be allowed to travel abroad or leave the country due to the investigation launched against him for declaring martial law. The ministry said that he had thrown the country into chaos in less than a week by imposing martial law. The opposition is once again preparing to bring an impeachment motion against Yoon in Parliament to remove him from power. Yun suddenly declared martial law on the night of 3 December and sent special forces and helicopters to the parliament. The MPs of his party along with the opposition rejected his order and forced him to withdraw his decision. President Yoon faced impeachment and is now facing a criminal investigation into his sudden decision. However, he narrowly escaped an impeachment motion in Parliament, leading to protests across Seoul demanding strict action against the President. Despite remaining in office as President, Yoon Suk Yeol and his close associates are facing several investigations, including an investigation into alleged rebellion. The Justice Ministry confirmed on Monday that Yoon is the first South Korean president to be banned from leaving the country while in office. Last week, President Yoon declared emergency martial law in a decisive battle against North Korean-backed ‘anti-national’ and ‘communist’ forces. Martial law may have lasted only six hours, but it sparked a wave of political unrest in South Korea as lawmakers and citizens demanded Yoon’s removal from office. As a result, Yun was forced to withdraw his order. Since then, protests have been taking place on the streets of South Korea demanding his impeachment. The opposition has filed a police complaint against Yoon along with former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun and eight other officials for being part of the ‘rebellion’. The former Defense Minister has been arrested by the authorities.
