The Russian game Sparta 2035 was published – another project that funded the Institute for the Development of the Internet (IRI). So far, only the first chapter from the planned three is available to users, but it is already obvious that there is no point in waiting for the rest.
This is a monotonous, boring and not very beautiful tactical game that does not bring anything new to the genre. Medusa tells why an attempt to copy the popular western series has failed. The game appeared in Steam a day later, on the third anniversary of a full -scale invasion of Ukraine. The developers themselves argue that the delay occurred due to the fault of the site. The creation of the game is responsible. In the past, her team was engaged in games, and Sparta 2035 was the first attempt to create a traditional and relatively big game for PC. At the same time, one of the founders of the company and project producer Gleb Durnovo emphasized that Lipsar still remains an indie studio and works with modest budgets. The Institute of Development of the Internet allocated a grant of 90 million rubles for the development of Sparta 2035. However, at the end of 2022, Kommersant said that the total project budget is about 200 million. This is at least two and a half times less than that of a failure “Troubles”, which Iri also sponsored, but is quite comparable with the cost of developing Western Indie games. Moreover, it seems that they did not plan to create a full -fledged blockbuster in Lipsar Studio. Nevertheless, there wasn’t enough money for a good game. The main characters are mercenaries fictitious, but clearly Russian (judging by names) PMC Sparta. The description of the game on the VK Play page states that this is a “legendary detachment”, but the game does not specify what exactly he became famous for. Developers from Lipsar Studio do not at all do not bother with excessive details. The opening video says that the militants of the Daamat terrorist organization seized power in different countries throughout Africa and now reached another unnamed country. Her president hires PMCs to maintain power, but ultimately (that is, after the first training mission) it becomes clear that he will have to retreat and start gathering the resistance army. In fact, this is all that the player will learn about the conflict, heroes and secondary characters in the first few hours of the game. Moreover, after the second task, in which you need to capture the dry load in order to equip the base on it, the plot generally ceases to develop. Some scraps of information can be obtained from reading news at the headquarters, but this is clearly not enough to motivate the player to continue passing. In addition, the former president reports that now he has nothing to pay for the mercenaries and they will have to somehow get out. Then follows a series of the same mission – so much that is so that sometimes even short briefings of the curator in front of them are repeated word in word. “Sparta 2035” refers to the genre of step -by -step tactical games such as XCOM or. A small detachment of mercenaries lands on the map and tries to complete the task, fighting with opponents. True, quite often this task comes down to the usual destruction of all enemies on the map. The locations themselves do not differ in a particular variety – the same type of landscapes on which the time of day sometimes changes. The game process in Sparta is quite primitive. For each move, one character can do two actions. As a rule, this movement is closer to the enemy and an attack. But you can shoot twice if the enemy is already in the reach. Or the mercenary can move on, but then he does not have enough points to an attacking action. The mercenaries are carried out in the shelters so as not to fall under enemy fire, and they wait for the moment when it will be possible to make a successful shot. The probability of hitting is estimated as a percentage, and in order to increase it, you need to get as close as possible to the enemy. It is advisable to get around from the side and take it by surprise. And then repeat. And again. And yet. At the same time, enemies do not demonstrate any miracles of intelligence and simply crush in number. The developers separately distinguish the so-called vertical gameplay. This means that mercenaries, as well as their enemies, can rise to the second or third floors of buildings to get an advantage. But this system works poorly: very often the scenery interferes and close the review, and because of the most convenient camera, it is difficult to analyze in principle who is where it is. At the same time, here the developers are often fond of, arranging multi -storey buildings if possible. Is it not the only well -working solution – to add observation mode to the game. In this case, the mercenary spends one point of action, leaves the shelter and controls a certain sector. If one of the enemies falls into it, the player’s character will begin to attack. Thus, the enemy will receive damage, and his action will be interrupted. Enemies can also go into this regime – then they will need to be circumvented and attacking the flanks without getting into the sector. There is a mission to equip the base, hire recruits (additional or to replace the dead) and conclude contracts for the supply of new equipment and weapons. It sounds interesting, but in reality this is also a monotonous process. In addition, many of these actions cannot be performed immediately – this requires playing time. In addition, after missions, mercenaries should rest – so the developers pushing the player to collect a large detachment. In practice, this is just a few annoying little things that limit users. There is a specialization (for example, an attack aircraft, sniper or doctor) with its unique abilities. Someone knows how to throw grenades, someone-to destroy small shelters. But the new recruits have no specialization – it is determined automatically as it is pumped. The player does not control this process, which forces the detachment blindly. Visually, the game looks mediocre, but still tolerant in the framework of the genre. However, there are completely hackshots. For example, portraits of characters look as if they were generated with the help of a neural network, and in general they are not like a model of mercenaries in battle. On the site of the game, the developers promise the “atmosphere of militants, humor and the spirit of adventure.” However, in reality, the whole atmosphere comes down to poor voice acting (the actors traditionally replay and confuse intonations), stupid cries on the battlefield and completely meaningless bravura phrases during briefings. “Oh, the real work smelled!” – one of the mercenaries before the capture of the ship speaks joyfully. “So, friends, the story will do!” – the former president answers him out of place. Instead of fearless warriors, the developers of Lipsar Studio, it seems, without suspecting it themselves, draw images of stupid soldiers. The players themselves also pay attention to the unsuccessful voice acting and poorly spelled out the characters. “At the exit, the same parade of freaks turned out. The characters seemed to really come up with children, and they wrote dialogs to them. The voice acting breaks away any desire to play. I took specially noun beans, just not to listen to these nonsense, ”one of the users wrote in his review. Sparta 2035 reached its peak in Steam the day after the release – then 186 people played at the same time. This is an insignificant indicator by the standards of the platform. For comparison: the arthaus project Indika at the start attracted 1,200 people at the same time. There is no data on VK Play activity in the public domain.
