Ramtane Lamamra, Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, met with senior government officials during his recent visit to Sudan. Among them was General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the top commander of the Sudanese armed forces and head of the Transitional Sovereign Council.
The UN envoy also visited Ethiopia where he met a delegation of paramilitary forces (RSF) in the capital Addis Ababa. Ramtane Lamamra has expressed hope for an end to violent conflict after his visit and has underlined the important role of the United Nations in maintaining peace in the country. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity. UN News: Your What progress was made during this visit?Ramatne Lamamra: I am excited by the support my mission has received. The Sudanese authorities have pledged to work closely with the UN and be part of the Secretary-General’s efforts to bring peace to Sudan. I have pledged to end the suffering of Sudanese citizens and ensure stability, security, democratic governance and development. Reiterated the strong desire of the United Nations. I cannot speak of any significant progress at this time, but we will continue our work, aimed at bringing all parties closer to a peaceful solution. Is. The only option for us is to continue our efforts. © UNHCR/Andrew McConnell The war in Sudan has displaced millions of people, including many in neighboring Chad. UN News: Did you meet with representatives of civil society, women’s groups and what was discussed during these talks? Ramtane Lamamra: I spoke several times with representatives of Sudanese civil society. It is important to have a discussion with diverse representatives of the political and civil society sectors in Sudan, including women, youth and other marginalized voices. They are the ones who are bearing the burden of this heartbreaking war, which is too much to bear. It is not possible to achieve. Ending this unbearable pain is a big priority for the citizens of Sudan. At the same time, we must continue our efforts to end this war and pursue an inclusive and credible political process. A Sudanese refugee sits with her three-month-old twins at a UNICEF-supported breastfeeding and nutrition awareness center in eastern Chad. UN News: This violent conflict has been going on for the last 20 months, with no end in sight, despite efforts by the UN and other regional organizations. What changes are needed to make progress toward a ceasefire? Ramatane Lamamra: It is time to end this violent conflict, which has continued for too long and is causing suffering to Sudanese civilians. Interests must be kept paramount and it must be understood that there can be no military solution to this war. This is the lesson we have learned from history. To end this bloodshed, there needs to be a ceasefire that paves the way for a negotiated settlement, an inclusive process led by Sudanese citizens to protect the unity of Sudan. If this does not happen then this war will have serious consequences for Sudan and the entire region. I personally cannot understand that two years of this war are being completed in April next year, but still influential countries and others No massive, collective pressure has been exerted on the aggressive parties. This pressure should also have long been exerted on those foreign parties who are supplying arms and equipment, which are essential for the unity and territorial integrity of Sudan and a peaceful understanding the solution and nurture military illusion at the expense of values. I will continue my efforts with all parties concerned to do our best to ensure that we move toward a common goal. Sudanese citizens deserve this.
