In the Swiss canton of Vale, as a result of the gathering of the glacier, the village of Blatten was destroyed on May 28. The rockfalls in the Slid Valley began on May 14, the situation worsened and on the evening of May 17 the authorities decided to declare evacuation in Blatten. 92 local residents and 16 guests left the village. In time, the decision made to move people from Blatten saved dozens of lives. Nevertheless, the Associated Press reports, after the glacier gather on Blatten, one person-a 64-year-old man-is listed as missing. Canton Vale, even before the collapse of the glacier, introduced the regime of a special situation, which allowed to quickly attract resources to eliminate the consequences of the incident, including getting assistance from the army. The head of the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications, Albert Roesti, noted that residents of mountain regions always realize the risks that they have to face. “Nature is stronger than man,” he emphasized, assuring that the authorities would provide all the necessary assistance in restoring the village.
