The forges of Tarbes saved thanks to the manufacture of shells?

Threatened with liquidation four years ago, the Tarbes forges have seen their order book filling up since 2022. A subsidiary of Europlasma, the hollow bodies manufacturing company is “rebosted” by the production of shells intended for Ukraine and by the reset of European forces. © Free Nomad / UNSPLASH – (Illustration photo) Save save Receive Defense alerts It is an unexpected resurrection for Tarbes forges, hollow body production site – then sent to KNDS which is responsible for integrating the explosive load. While the risk of compulsory liquidation was increasingly heavy in 2021, “we went from almost to stop in 2022 not far from 60,000 bus bodies in 2024” welcomes Jérôme Garnache-Creuillot, boss of Europlasma which manages the forges. “Right now,” he says, “our pace is 2,000 shells per week and we have the ambition at the end of the year to produce 15,000 per month.” The reasons for this sudden upturn? The war in Ukraine and the substantial production of 155 mm bus bodies (NATO standard) intended for kyiv, details BFMTV. But also the displayed will of European Union leaders to rearm their respective countries in a tense geopolitical context. To 80 employees on the site, the only one in France to produce these empty shells, to double the volume of production – objective of Europlasma. An important issue for France, when you know that Russia is able to produce “50,000 shells per day”, specifies Jérôme Garnache-Creuillot. If the shells intended for Ukraine represent the largest of production, a contract with the Czech Republic requires accelerating the rate: 50,000 bodies of shells have been ordered, including 31,000 to deliver this year. To meet the demand, the ability of forges can be pushed “at the maximum of 20,000 shells per day” according to the CEO, which specifies: “The idea is to produce in the forges of Tarbes and tomorrow, to be able to manufacture large caliber shells”, in the Nord department, where Europlasma was established in 2024. Europlasma has a double problem: the lack of workforce “qualified or highly qualified” notes Jérôme Garnache-Creuillot, who says he is looking for boilermakers, blacksmiths and welders. But also the insufficient number of machines and molds to make warheads. “It is mainly the delivery times that are involved, often doubled in these times of high demand,” explains the CEO.
