US President Donald Trump is considering reducing US obligations to NATO allies, NBC News reports with reference to sources. According to the television channel, the considered change in policy includes a partial refusal to comply with the fifth article of the NATO Charter, which obliges military assistance to the allies who have been attacked. The United States, according to Trump’s idea, will not be able to protect the alliance members who spend their defense are not enough. Also, within the framework of the new policy, a refusal to conduct exercises with countries with low defense spending is considered. In response to an official request for a comment, the National Security Council said that “President Trump is committed to NATO and the fifth article.” Trump repeatedly criticized the European NATO allies for insufficient, in his opinion, expenses for defense and threatened them, including the potential exit of the USA from the alliance in case these expenses are not increased. In accordance with the current agreements, the military expenses of NATO countries must exceed 2% of GDP. As of 2024, only 23 out of 32 alliance countries reach this indicator. The greatest expenses are in Poland (4.1%), the United States itself spends 3.4% of GDP on defense. (Tagstotranslate) News
