Donald Trump has secured majority in the US presidential elections. According to media reports, Donald Trump has won 277 electoral seats. Whereas Kamala Harris has won on 226. To become President it is necessary to win majority i.e. 270 electoral seats. In America, voters do not directly elect the President. The President is selected by the 538-member Electoral College. To win any candidate has to get majority i.e. 270 or more electoral votes. Therefore, a candidate may gain a lead in the popular vote but still lose if he or she cannot convert this into an Electoral College majority. For example, in 2016, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton received about 3 million more votes than Trump, but lost the election. Because Trump had achieved majority by taking 306 electoral votes. What records will Trump hold? 1. Donald Trump is facing serious criminal charges. He will be the first US President to remain in office under legal impeachment. Earlier in May this year, a New York jury found Trump guilty on all 34 charges related to falsification of business documents. These allegations were related to his alleged relationship with porn star Stormy Daniels and paying money to silence him. 2. Trump will become the only President in American history against whom impeachment proceedings were initiated twice during his tenure. Impeachment is a process in which a government official is accused of wrongdoing. If found guilty during the trial, that officer can be removed from his post. Trump was first impeached by the House in 2019 over his dealings with Ukraine. He was accused of seeking inappropriate help from Ukraine to enhance his re-election chances. The House passed the charges, but the Senate acquitted him in 2020. The second impeachment process against Donald Trump began in 2021 when a violent mob attacked the Capitol. Trump was accused of “inciting the crowd to insurrection” but once again the Senate acquitted him. However, by then he himself had left the post. 3. Donald Trump will be the second President in American history to be re-elected after losing an election. Earlier, Grover Cleveland had served in the White House twice, when he won again after losing an election. His first term was from 1885 to 1889 and the second from 1893 to 1897. Trump served as President of the United States from 2016 to 2020. He defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton. However, after losing to Joe Biden in the 2020 elections, he could not get a second consecutive term. What will happen next? On December 17, electors will vote in their respective states and Washington D.C. Will meet and formally select the President and Vice President. After this, the electoral votes will be sent to the President of the Senate (who is currently Vice President Kamala Harris) and the Archivist by December 25. The Vice President presides over the counting of the Electoral College votes and will announce the results at a joint session of Congress on January 6. When will Trump take oath? The swearing-in ceremony of America’s new President Donald Trump and Vice President will be held on January 20. After this he will officially become the President.
