VW boss Oliver Blume questions the date 2035 for the end of new petrol engines and diesel vehicles in the EU. The traffic turnaround “always needs test points that are based on the realities of how quickly e-mobility is spreading,” said Blume of the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Saturday edition) on the sidelines of the car show in Shanghai. “And if necessary, politically flexible transition periods are needed.” In this context, the VW CEO praised the EU Commission’s push of introducing a three-year compensation mechanism for the CO2 fleet targets from 2025 to 2027. As a result, “no gram of CO2 savings to protect the climate is lost,” assured Blume. However, the manufacturers received flexibility to reach their CO2 goals. “It is a real reality check,” said Blume of the “NOZ”. “We need the same thing for future milestones such as 2030 and 2035.” Blume sees the need to catch up at Ladenet’s network in Deutschlandzugleich, the VW boss Blume demanded more support from politics. “The high run of e-mobility does not succeed alone with the right cars,” he said in the interview. “The framework conditions must also be right.” This included the charging infrastructure, energy prices and “a binding promotion of e-mobility”. Electric cars are considered free of emission – they can be offset against other, more climate -damaging vehicles from the same manufacturer as part of the fleet limit values. Groups such as Volkswagen and Renault have problems reaching exhaust gas specifications. They had asked for more flexibility in Brussels, because if the EU targets are missed, fines are at risk of fines. The European Parliament and the 27 EU countries must now negotiate the loosening proposals of the Commission. In theory, negotiators could bring further changes to the limit values and even in the combustion engine for 2035.
