Syria Crisis: Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali attempted to give a semblance of normalcy on Monday (December 09, 2024) and claimed that despite armed rebels forcing former President Bashar al-Assad to flee the country and take refuge in Russia “Most” cabinet ministers are working from their offices in the capital, Damascus. Jalali claimed that the security situation has improved since the previous day. “We are working to ensure that the transition period goes quickly and smoothly,” he told Sky News Arabia TV. He also claimed that the government was “coordinating” with the rebels and expressed a desire to meet with rebel leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. The Prime Minister’s statement comes at a time when most government officials are fleeing their offices fearing retaliation from armed rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). ‘We want to create a new Syria’ As they prepare to continue the work, government officials are adjusting to the new reality. Justice Khitam Haddada claimed in the court of Damascus that the judges are ready to return to work as soon as possible. “We want to give everyone their rights. We want to build a new Syria and continue the work, but in new ways,” Haddad said outside the court. Is the situation improving in Syria? There was calm in Damascus on Monday morning as people wanted to return to their new routines. Most shops and government institutions were closed as people celebrated Assad’s departure in public squares. Despite public transport remaining closed, civilian traffic resumed.
