In 2012, she became the first trans person to work as an intern at the White House during the Obama-Biden administration. In 2016, she made history as the first transgender person to speak at the Democratic National Convention. According to the New York Times, since 2010, only one seat in Delaware has been held by Democrats, which McBride won.
