The outskirts of the city were real fortresses with reinforced concrete pillboxes, tanks and self -propelled guns trapped into the ground, so the Red Army moved forward with heavy losses. On April 25, nine Soviet armies began to break through to the center of Berlin. The most fierce battle unfolded for the Reichstag, which was defended by the SS troops and Hitler’s personal security units. On May 1, the flag of the 150th Infantry Division was finally installed on the roof of the building, which became the official banner of victory.
