Ricarda Lang criticizes space flight as a PR show without benefits

The former chairman of the Greens, Ricarda Lang, criticized the space trip of pop star Katy Perry on X. The American singer “caused more CO2 emissions in ten minutes than a person in his whole life,” said Lang. Perry had flown to space together with Lauren Sánchez, the fiancee of Tech billionaire and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, as well as four other women with Bezos’ space company Blue Origin on Monday. The hobby astronauts were able to enjoy the weightlessness there for a full four minutes. Long criticism of Perry triggered Mixed reactions: While some users pointed out that the rocket launch itself did not cause a direct CO2 emissions because the rocket was operated with hydrogen, a comment accused a concert by Taylor Swift, even though she visited with her air trips in one year when 200,000 kilometers in the jet. But there was also encouragement for long. A user wrote: “Rich people burn our earth. They are the main problem.” However, external content also came from a prominent side: The Islam critic Ahmad Mansour, known through his media appearances, wrote under the mail of the Green politician: “Progress was never a climate-neutral-and yet it was necessary.” Mansour also explained, whoever accounts for each individual act morally lose their eyes for the collective: “curiosity, discovery, technical innovation” – not everything can be measured in CO2, and certainly not the “human urge to the border”. She emphasized that she was not concerned with space travel as such that is without question a driver for technical innovation and human progress, but about a PR campaign in which a few celebrities had been shot for a few pictures for ten minutes. Universities and feminism announced the fight.
