When you work, are you sitting or standing? It turns out that this can tell something about the level of your life

On the platform of Visual Storitelling The Pudding, the study of the American journalist Alvina Chan on the social difference between those who sit and stand at work (Sitters vs Standers) was released. So, people who work sitting will be highly likely to earn more than those who work standing. And, of course, they have less chance of undermining their health at work. Medusa talked with the author of the study and retells the main conclusions. And also telling what trends in the labor market are in Russia and Europe. What is the difference in general – to sit or stand at work? What does the quality of life have to do with it? The American date-journalist Alvin Chang analyzed what physical activity is required for different professions and what it affects. Chang revised the ACCUPATIONAL REPUREMENTS Survey. The journalist offers to comprehend how the division of those who work sitting, and everyone else, looks like. Spoiler: You can also see a short video about this story (in English), and then read our more detailed retelling. “When I was little, I saw my parents worked on exhausting physical work. They had dry cleaning, they sold radio and owned several vending devices. And when my mother was young, she worked at a car factory. The father eventually received a scientific degree and became an engineer. He began to work in the office, there was no such hard work there, and it was already a completely different experience. My study illustrates how the gap between these works looks like today, ”says Chang Medusa about what inspired him to study. Take the laundry services in America. They fulfill most of their tasks standing: they disassemble their clothes, put it in washing machines, iron and steam it. Standing professions also include cooks, builders and many others who are forced to stand, bend down and lift weights during work. But programmers, accountants and HR managers almost always work sitting. Of course, there are professions that suggest that people work both sitting and standing: teachers, journalists, dentists, police, doctors or realtors. After the start of the war, the IT -Schools were actively leaving, mobilization forced to emigrate the “blue collar” research of Medusa – about where the new emigrants of the beginning of the war from Russia was looking for work, mobilization forced to emigrate the “blue collars” research “Medusa” – about where the new emigrants are looking for the work of recent decades for the past decences. To engage in dangerous physical labor – spheres like agriculture and industries in factories were automated, and people began to engage in paper or computer work more. Nevertheless, millions of people around the world are still busy with physically exhausting work. Moreover, there are still fewer people with sitting work than those who work standing. According to data for 2024, only 30% of American workers work sitting. Small physical efforts (lifting or transferring about 10 kilograms of weights) are required for another third of employees in the United States. And in general, hired workers are most in industries where physical labor is needed: in production, in sales and in the field of fast food. Occasionally, such work involves physical labor. Almost a quarter of American professions requires employees to raise something above their heads, even more than 30%-to bend or squat. For example, this applies to builders and aircraft mechanic. It is not surprising that people working standing, much greater chances to get injuries or get sick because of the specifics of work. Many people who are not obliged to stand at work can choose whether to sit or stand (or even lying while working on a remote). And most often they have autonomy: they independently choose when to take a break in work or go for lunch. Teachers or catering workers cannot afford this. Not to mention the fact that remote work is actually available only to a small set of professions. In the United States in 2023, about 60% of people were engaged in work, which does not imply remarks. People with low income and without higher education will rather enter this category of workers, reported by PEW Center. At the same time, most often sedentary work is better paid. Exceptions in the United States are only doctors, pharmacists and other medical workers. And do cooks, hairdressers or postmen get much less than engineers, analysts and managers. Why do doctors sometimes communicate rudely? And how do doctors and patients find a common language? Medical communication specialist Anna Sonkina-Dhodman-that will help the doctor and patient establish dialogue doctors sometimes rudely? And how do doctors and patients find a common language? Medical communication specialist Anna Sonkina-Dhodman-that he will help the doctor and the patient to establish a dialogue “in the pandemic of the coronavirus, we honored those who worked on the front line. During any political campaign, candidates never miss the opportunity to take pictures with builders or farmers. And they never forget to add that in adolescence they worked as a cashier, ”says Anvin Chang. At the same time, in the United States, many opposed the increase in the minimum wage (the country has not yet adopted federal law that raises the minimum wage to $ 15, although talking about this has been held since 2012). The program of President Trump is aimed at reducing social benefits. “The conclusion is clear: when it is convenient for us, we glorify physical work. And the rest of the time we treat people who perform it as work horses, ”Chang concludes. And how are things in Russia and Europe? In the European Union there is no such accurate statistics about wages and requirements for different professions, but by other indicators it can be judged that the situation is different in the USA, the European analytical center for the economy of Bruegel. So, according to the center’s calculations, in many EU countries, the salary of low -skilled employees is growing faster than that of highly qualified specialists. In the United States, it happens exactly the opposite. One of the main reasons is how the state and corporations relate to labor automation. In the United States, technologies are supplanted by people – as a result, low and middle -level workers begin to compete for jobs that have not yet been or cannot be automated. Thus, competition is increasing, and the salary for physical labor is reduced, economists from Yle and Massachusetts describe this process. Among European countries, inequality in payment of qualified and unskilled labor is observed in the UK and Germany. And the smallest gap is in the Scandinavian countries: Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The European Center Bruegel notes that overcoming inequality is the task of social policy: the state should regulate the labor market, monitor the level of minimal wages and support individual sectors of the economy. Soon dollar trillionaries will appear in the world. The first of them, probably, will be Ilon Musk the main data (and the main conclusions) from the OXFAM report on global inequality in the world will appear dollar trillionaries. The first of them, probably, will be Ilon Musk the main data (and the main conclusions) from the OXFAM report on the global inequalities of Russia, too, there are no statistics, how many people are busy with physical labor. At the same time, according to Rosstat, about a third of all working people in Russia (31%) work in the areas of agriculture and forestry, the extraction of fossils, the field of production, communal support and construction. People in Russia practically do not work from home. After Kovid, it can afford a remote for literally 1% of the population – and these are experts in the field of IT, technology and finance. The remote is a “monopoly of workers with higher education,” noted at the Center for Labor Studies of the Higher School. Professions for which remote and sitting work is suitable, one of the most popular in Russia. These are IT-specialists, engineers, sales specialists, as well as the oil and gas field, calculated Banki.ru based on the published hiring vacancies. An example of a unstressed, but still sitting profession is a pilot. At the same time, there is a need for unskilled workers – for example, in couriers. At the beginning of 2024, the demand for couriers increased four times, Bank.ru reported. Also predict a high demand for nannies. And the demand for workers exceeded the need for ITSHNIKS due to the rise in construction in Russia. That is, as demand for highly qualified (mainly technical) specialists grows, the need for physical labor is also growing. In addition, the growth of the need for highly qualified specialists and at the same time in physical labor negatively affects everyone who is in the middle. The professions like teachers and administrators cease to be both in demand and rightly paid. “You cannot fight the system: it is stronger. But if you undermine it from the inside, it works ”teachers with opposition views continue to teach in public schools, despite pressure. How do they manage to save themselves? “You cannot fight with the system: it is stronger. In order to resist this break, political measures are needed. State structures should pay attention to the difference between income of different groups of the population and not allow this gap becomes critical. For example, increase the minimum wage or introduce benefits for different areas of employment. (Tagstotranslate) News
